It’s heart rending to hear that the magnificent Adam had felt so sad about his life that he was resorting to drink. Having seen the heights and depths of life may have helped him to plumb the full span of peaks and depths of emotion in his songs.
There’s another take on this …. he just likes it. Not *everyone* who drinks socially is sad or pained. Sometimes they just do it for fun. They like the taste, and the result. It’s when they lose control that it becomes a problem. *IF* they lose control — not everyone does. I don’t think Adam was so sad. I think he just likes to let loose and party.
I get the sense that Adam had been very frustrated artistically. Seeing Adam in his full regalia chameleon mode on Idol was like seeing a genie emerging from its lamp after centuries of imprisonment. I’ve read that the producers of Ten Commandments had advised Adam not to be so gay in his appearance. That or his “theatrical” quality is something that listeners, including Idol judges, promptly pick up on.
Adam had waited eight years before trying out for Idol because he treasured his independence. But he also must have felt he had run out of alternatives to sign up and seek his audience via that route. He had been feeling typecast as a niche performer in showing his true self, or having to hide his true self.
Some of what I have been responding to in Adam’s performances was that sense of artistic exultation of someone bursting free of prescribed limits. Luckily, Adam came to Idol at a time when Idol management felt like it had been typecast into a narrower and narrower pop-country mold. Its previous stars, while talented, were not international in caliber. Adam and Idol were what each other sorely needed. Adam finally gained a wide audience; Idol broke out of its ho-hum mold.
A true artist like Adam cannot help but be himself, or will be very very frustrated. Also, being gay in this society binds oneself to continual reminders of repression and ostracism. As a result, a very high percentage of gays become depressed or alcoholic or both.
Anyway, here’s hoping that Adam Lambert will be happy now and live as long as Kris Allen.
Can they just not think of other questions to ask Adam? Such a fascinating guy — there is so much more I’d like to know. In any case, I am so thrilled that the talent Adam knew he had to give if just given the chance has found its outlet. I for one can’t wait to see him live and buy his albums.
I also think it would be great fun to drink heavily with him. …
Lol — when that interviewer lady said she was gonna ask him about his *crush* AGAIN saying “A girls gotta have fun, right?” I was thinking “SURE! But COME ON! FIND SOME NEW QUESTIONS TO ASK!!!” Surely a girl can have fun with new questions, yes?? YES!
I AGREE COMPLETELY. YOU REALLY GOT THE ESSENTIAL THING. .WELL DONE, VERY GOOD COMMENT!!!
